The film explores the macabre history of Karol Kot, a Kraków student arrested in 1966 for a series of grisly murders and attempted murders. He claimed in court that his appetite for blood was inspired while working part-time at a slaughterhouse in Pcim, southern Poland. Kot said he took pleasure in drinking the blood of slain pigs. He was hanged in May 1968. He was dubbed "The Kraków Vampire." The Red Spider was selected for the main competition of the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
